Valencia, February 27, 2025 – Noemí Navarro Lleó, a predoctoral researcher and laboratory technician at MAINBIOTICS (IATA-CSIC), participated in the AGROALNEXT2025 Congress: Innovation and Knowledge Transfer in the Spanish Agri-Food Sector, held at Miguel Hernández University, where she delivered an oral presentation titled “Therapeutic Potential of Pleurotus Residues in the Regulation of Inflammation and Immunity.”

The study presented by Navarro Lleó is part of the PANACEA project, funded by the Generalitat Valenciana and developed in collaboration with the BIOFUN Laboratory: Structure and Functionality of Food Biopolymers at IATA-CSIC. The research focuses on the valorization of Pleurotus mushroom discards, which contain bioactive compounds such as β-glucans and glycoproteins with potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties.

During her talk, Navarro Lleó shared the study’s findings, demonstrating that certain Pleurotus species, such as P. citrinopileatus and P. salmoneo, are capable of regulating inflammation and stimulating the immune system without toxic effects. These results pave the way for reusing these residues as ingredients in the development of health-promoting supplements, aligning with the principles of circular economy and sustainability.

Additionally, Mª José Fabra, senior scientist and member of the BIOFUN laboratory at IATA-CSIC, presented the poster “Valorization of Aqueous Fractions Obtained from Different Biomasses of Pleurotus Mushrooms”, part of the Circular Economy theme. This work focused on the compositional characterization of four Pleurotus species and was conducted in collaboration with Zaida Pérez-Bassart, Noemí Navarro-Lleó, Christine Bäuerl, Antonio Martínez-Abad, María Carmen Collado, and Amparo López-Rubio, also at IATA-CSIC, with support from the Interdisciplinary Platform SusPlast-CSIC.

The collaboration between MAINBIOTICS and BIOFUN has been key to this research, joining forces in the study of new nutraceuticals and resource optimization in the agri-food sector. Navarro Lleó’s presentation at AGROALNEXT2025 reflects IATA-CSIC’s commitment to innovation and knowledge transfer in the development of sustainable, high-impact solutions for society.
