An Interactive Experience to Explore the Importance of Gut Bacteria in Human Health

Valencia, May 14, 2024Expociència, the most anticipated science outreach event in Valencia, once again surprised attendees with innovative proposals and educational activities that captivated visitors of all ages. The annual event, co-organized by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), University of Valencia, and various entities of the Parc Científic, took place on Saturday, May 11, at the Parc Científic de la Universitat de València (Paterna).

From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, visitors enjoyed and learned from the numerous activities organized in this space of innovation. The Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC) presented over twenty activities, coordinated by twelve of its nineteen research groups.

Members of MAINBIOTICS, part of the Lactic Bacteria and Probiotics Group at IATA-CSIC, took part in organizing an interactive game titled ‘The Adventure of the Gut’. This activity immersed attendees in the fascinating world of the gut microbiota and its impact on health.

An Innovative Initiative to Promote Digestive Health

In an effort to raise awareness about digestive health, the Lactic Bacteria and Probiotics Group of IATA-CSIC offered a dynamic activity that allowed participants to explore the world of gut bacteria in a fun and educational way. Both children and adults ventured into a giant gut, learning about the crucial role bacteria play in our health.

The activity began with a detailed explanation about the bacteria found in food and their impact on the digestive system. Participants were introduced to the concept of bacteria, as well as the importance of probiotics and prebiotics to maintain a healthy balance in the gut.

The Giant Gut: An Interactive Journey

The highlight of the activity was the immersion into the “giant gut”, where children became defenders of gut health. Equipped with “bacteria balls,” representing beneficial bacteria from food, participants faced the challenge of protecting the gut from a virus. By sticking the “good bacteria” to the walls of the gut, children learned about the importance of a healthy diet to strengthen our natural defenses.

The activity was not only a success among the younger participants but also provided adults with a valuable opportunity to learn more about digestive health. Attendees interacted with experts, explored bacteria plates isolated in the lab, and participated in Q&A sessions to deepen their understanding.

An Educational and Fun Success

This initiative proved to be an effective and fun way to educate the community about the importance of a balanced diet and the essential role of bacteria in our well-being. With an interactive educational approach, the activity succeeded in raising awareness and empowering participants to make healthier decisions in their daily lives.

The Lactic Bacteria and Probiotics Group of IATA-CSIC was excited to be part of Expociència and share their knowledge of the gut microbiota in an accessible and entertaining way. They believe it is essential to educate the new generations about caring for health from within, using play and fun as key tools.
