Valencia, May 27, 2024 – On Monday, May 27, 2024, the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA) held a new Seminar of the Week. This time, the speaker was M. Carmen Collado, principal investigator of MAINBIOTICS, who invited Professor Harry Sokol, who delivered a lecture titled: “Alteration of the gut microbiome in IBD: from observation to intervention.”
About Harry Sokol
Harry Sokol is a Doctor in Microbiology and Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Sorbonne University. He is also the coordinator of the Paris Center for Microbiome Medicine and the Fecal Microbiota Transplant Center at Saint Antoine Hospital. Additionally, he co-directs the Microbiota, Gut, and Inflammation Lab at the Centre de recherche Saint-Antoine (CRSA) – Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM). With over 190 published articles in high-impact journals such as Gut, Gastroenterology, Cell Metabolism, Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Communications, and Nature Medicine, Sokol is an internationally recognized expert in the study of the gut microbiota and its relationship with pathologies like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Professor Sokol has pioneered research on the role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBD, describing the dysbiosis associated with this pathology and highlighting the importance of commensal bacteria like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in intestinal homeostasis and disease. His current work focuses on deciphering the microbiota-host interactions to better understand their role in health and disease, as well as developing innovative treatments. Additionally, he is exploring the microbiota’s role in tryptophan metabolism. As the president of the French group of Fecal Microbiota Transplant, Sokol coordinated a pilot randomized controlled trial evaluating fecal microbiota transplantation in Crohn’s disease.
